It gives you control over taking care of yourself and knowing what you put into your body. Every skill you master (cooking, sewing, car maintenance, computer skills, writing, public speaking, etc...) makes you freer: you don't have to depend on someone else to "take care of it" for you.

-Nadia, 17, NJ, USA I personally love netball. Team sports are great -- and you're in middle school, so what's the harm in trying new things? I'm reaching the end of high school, and one thing I regret is not trying out for the volleyball team, or joining the gymnastics club, just getting out of my comfort zone and trying new things. TRY! I am really lazy, super busy, hate going to the gym (I have to leave my house to do that, which I also hate doing), and get bored easily if I am doing something monotonous like running on a treadmill for 30 minutes. A lot of HIIT workouts are between 15 and 20 minutes long, equipment free, fast paced so I do not get bored, and can easily be done at home. Also, I get my workouts from YouTube, so I know exactly what my form should look like, and following along with the person in the video gives me a good idea of the speed I should aim for. So, I basically have no excuse not to do it.

-Rebecca, 18, NJ, USA I hate working out. Since I know that about myself, I know I'm not likely to stick to any workout routine. Instead, I try to make good day-to-day choices: eat tasty healthy foods in reasonable amounts, walk instead of drive, take the stairs instead of the elevator, etc…
-Trixie, 41, NJ, USA Crunches.
-Natalie, 19, NJ/PA, USA |
It is a priceless and irreplaceable gift.
-Susan, 47, NJ, USA It’s the only one you have and if you feel good it makes life so much better.
-Allison, 17, NJ, USA Because we don’t get a second chance at treating it properly to last us our whole lives.
-Rea, 17, NJ, USA Your body is all you are ever guaranteed to have. It does so much for you — treat it kindly in return.
-Sabina, 17, NJ, USA Your body is so much more than your physical appearance. I think the majority of people, myself included, tend to get caught up in our own appearances and what we define as beautiful, and often forget that inside our bodies are all of these different parts that keep us walking, thinking, and breathing properly. So, if we fail to pay attention to the nutrients that we need in order to go on a juice cleanse or new FAD diet, we’re really only putting ourselves at risk. Your body is something that should be cherished, your ability to do all that you do is a gift.
-Madison, 18, NJ, USA You only have one body and one life and you can't get anything back that you regret.

I also believe that in order to be loved in a healthy way, you need to love yourself first. Taking care of your body is part of loving and respecting yourself. If you don't love yourself, respect yourself, and take care of yourself (and your body) you can't expect other people to. To be successful, confident, and happy, it is very important that you are able to look in the mirror and/or look within yourself and like what you see, not because someone else does, but because you are proud of what you have accomplished and look forward to all of the things you know you will accomplish in the future.

-Rebecca, 18, NJ, USA Your body will always be with you whether you like and appreciate it or not. If you are kind to it and care for it, your body can achieve great things.
-Andrea, 27, MN, USA We want it to be around for a long, long time.
-Linda, 66, NJ, USA It's the only one you've got and one of the best ways to take care of yourself. Its your's and ONLY YOU get to decide what to do, or not do, with it. It is strong and powerful and can do so many amazing things, and YOU get to decide what those things are. Listen to your body and it will tell you how to take good care of it. And all the "weird" stuff your body does is not actually weird. There are tons of variations in human bodies and they are all normal, "right" ways to be. Never let anyone tell you that you should be ashamed of your body and all the amazing things it can do. When you begin to have sexual feelings, those are completely normal and natural too. You shouldn't feel ashamed. Explore your body and those feelings in ways that are comfortable for you; that is completely normal. But don't even let anyone make you feel like your sexuality is there for their benefit. It is not. Your sexuality, like your body, is yours and you get to decide what to do or not do with it.
-Trixie, 41, NJ, USA |
Because it shows you love yourself.
-Natalie, 17, NJ, USA Even if it may not seem like it now, anything people do that harms their bodies now will have a bad long-run health effect. Controlling your health is something that you can try to control for your enjoyment of life, because a healthier body will yield a more positive and comfortable outlook on life.
-Marisa, 17, NJ, USA You only get one, so you should invest in it.

-Grace, 16, CA, USA You only get one body and one life; best not waste it.
-Victoria, 18, NJ, USA So you can live a long life and get to experience cool things.
-Madeline, 26, CA, USA You only have one for your entire life, and you need it to achieve whatever your hopes and dreams are.
-Daniella, 17, NJ, USA Mental, physical, emotional wellness! If you love yourself you feel better and if you eat right you also have better mood and digestion.
-Mira, 17, NJ, USA Because it’s the only body you have.
-Jewel, 16, CA, USA Because while you're young, you don't feel the effects of not eating healthy/sleeping late, it's not until you're older (like your mom's age) till you're body starts to get tired really easily, so it's important to take care of yourself at a young age.

-Nadia, 17, NJ, USA How you treat your body will affect how you feel and think - it coincides with your mood and self talk.
-Jessica, 44, NJ, USA Because you are stuck with it for the rest of your life so you have to take care of it.

-Rachel, 16, Hong Kong To be able to live your best life when you’re older.
-Noelle, 33, NJ, USA You will feel better overall I'm not the best to my body but now that I'm a mom I realize how important it is to start your day with a small meal in the morning and drinking water keeps you feeling good. Keeping your food with any greens or veggies in it. It's easy to overlook the simplest of things that can hurt you if your body but fully worth it to give it to yourself.
-Amanda, 23, CA, USA Because your body is your temple, you only get one and you have to cherish it and take care of it.
-Kathy, 27, CA, USA Bodies are beautiful art. We only have one of them, so you should treat yours with respect and love. Any damage that comes from trying to alter your body will follow you for the rest of your years. And when you are kind to your body, your entire physical and mental state will feel wonderful.
-Raychel, 16, CA, USA Because people only see true beauty when you have self respect for your body.
-Elaine, 17, CA, USA Your body is the only one you’ll ever have. Being kind to it now helps prevent it hurting in the future. Nobody wants to be slowed down.
-Marlena, 27, Queensland, Australia You only get one!
-Gina, 40, NJ, USA You feel better looks better and are a happier person.
-Diana, 57, CA, USA Your body is beautiful, your body is a part of who you are. You want to give it good feelings and experiences so living in your body becomes more and more enjoyable.
-Nikitha, 18, NJ, USA Taking care of your body is important because you only get one and it brings you through your whole life time.
-Carrie, 49, NJ, USA So that you can do everything you want to do in life. My mom says "health is not everything but if you don't have it, it's everything."
-Charlotte, 53, NJ, USA Because once you start to get older, have more life experience, you will start to realise that everything doesn’t revolve around the middle school/high school drama or insecurities. You still have the REST of your life left to live, and if you aren’t kind to your own body, how are you going to enjoy those years?
-Nyna, 15, CA, USA Because it's the only one that you have in this life.

-Aliyah, 18, NJ, USA If you are bad to your body, you won’t feel good.

-Allison, 17, NJ, USA Because your body is your temple!!
-Victoria, 13, NJ, USA Your body enables you to do all the things you love and spend time with those you love. You need to treat your body well with the proper nutrients and exercise in order to continue to live your best life.
-Hannah, 14, NJ, USA Because your body is great because it's your body. It's yours, it's something that deserved to be loved because it's part of you.
-Baylee, 12, CA, USA The media always gives reasons for me to dislike something about my body, and other people are more than happy to judge. I realised that if I wasn't going to accept and love my body myself, I couldn't expect that respect from someone else. It really starts with yourself, and realising how amazing it is for holding you up each day and allowing you to do everything that you do.
-Bridget, 17, CA, USA Oh gosh it’s important to be kind to your body for so many reasons. Your body is the temple holding what should be worshipped, your soul, your mind, your thoughts, ideas, potential, future, skill, talent, love. Cherish that and express that and embrace that. Spread the love and don’t forget to save some for yourself because otherwise, the rest is pointless. Truth be told, I bare scars emotionally, mentally, and physically and they show. And it’s the people who find the beauty in your scars who you should find worth fighting for yourself for. So many people love who you are and who you’ve become and what you are going to do for the world and so many people love you, so you should too. You want someone to love? How about yourself?
-Anonymous It's the only one you're gonna get so you have to treat it right. If you constantly have negative thoughts about your body, it's going to inhibit your ability to grow.
-Victoria, 18, NJ, USA Sometimes I forget to be kind to myself, and I definitely feel it the next day, the next week, the next month. If you forget to keep yourself healthy, you might get better grades, you might be able to devote more time for other things, but ultimately you won't be happy. Your body affects your mind, and vice versa. In the future, it's possible that you might not be able to do something because you weren't kind to your body in the past.
-Emily, 15, CA, USA It is the one thing you will always have!!

-Gerry, 71, NJ, USA Because your body may not be kind to you later.
-Carolina, 18, FL, USA We get 1 body for our lifetimes. We need to take good care of our body so it is in the best form to take us throughout older years. Many people live into their 90s and even past 100, so our body needs to be ready for a good, long life. My Ob/Gyn told me as I turned 50: "The first 50 years we are given. The next 50 years we must earn!"
-Nina, 62, NJ, USA It helps you to be more confident and listen more to what your mind says rather than what others say. All bodies are beautiful and should be seen as such.
-Jamie, 15, NY, USA Because if you are you have more self confidence, which helps you make connections with other people.

-Carrie, 41, NJ, USA The younger you start, the easier it is to maintain when you're older. You'll feel better, feel stronger, and your health will improve.
-Clarissa, 51, TX, USA You have to take care of your body because it is the vessel that holds the rest of you in place. We have no thoughts and dreams, no compassion and kindness, no love and relationships without first having a body to contain them.
-Jamie, 33, NJ, USA It’s the only one you get, and once you damage it, it’s not easy for it to heal. It takes a long time.
-Meagan, 37, MD, USA Because of the mind-body connection: if you don’t treat your body right, you won’t function well and this will affect your mood.

-Pooja, 17, NJ, USA Ibuprofen and blankets.
-Ashley, 15, CA, USA Exercise and eat froyo.
-Ashley, 28, NJ, US Place a towel on your bed if you have a heavy flow! If you end up leaking through in the night, the towel is much easier to clean than the sheets. Always keep extra pads/tampons in your bag even when you think you don’t need them. (You might help someone else out if not yourself!) Make sure you know if there are extra pads/tampons at the school nurse or bathrooms. If you stain your clothes, soak them in water until you shower, then wash them while you shower!
-Katherine, 18, Hong Kong Put one pad in front, one in back for the first few days when you're sleeping! This way you won't leak.

-Charlotte, 53, NJ, USA For physical pain, I use a heating pad on my abdomen and lower back, and take naps if I feel really bad. Soaking in a hot bath helps, too. Side note: I live far away from my family, and when I moved out, my mom let me take her old heating pad she used to use. (It wasn't a gift so much as a "sure, you can take it" type of thing.) But now, whenever I'm on my period and hurting and I turn on that heating pad, it's like a little comfort from my mom. And for me, it's kind of a reminder that periods are an awful/weird/beautiful thing that nearly all women have in common — which also makes me feel better and happier.
-Ali, 28, FL, USA Ooh. When I was a teenager I had terrible cramps, and taking a Motrin (ibuprofen) BEFORE they came on always helped. I would take baths sometimes too, but seemed to hurt even worse later (but sure felt good while in the warm tub!). Also, forgive yourself when you're feeling moody (if that's one of your symptoms) and remember to realize it's your body doing it's thing.
-Dany, 56, VT, USA Honestly, I mope around a lot when I'm on my period, but I guess exercising is a good way, and just doing a lot of cross training.

-Baylee, 12, CA, USA Staying hydrated and moving around a lot.
-Anonymous LOTS of sleep. There's nothing better than sleep. And if you start to feel pain and you know you have a regular period cramp, just pop in an Tylenol or Advil. -Georgia, 17, CA, USA Lots of water. Walking. Rest. Bananas help with cramps.

-Bella, 16, CA, USA Be prepared mentally for a day of being achy and a bit tired.
-Alex, 36, NJ, USA I would try to stay ahead of the pain with Advil and a trusty heating pad. With endometriosis I pretty much suffered through my cycles.

A tip I learned from a nurse- take Motrin or Advil right when you get your period so the medicine will kick in before the cramps do. Also exercise works wonders to stop cramps and get your mind off things.

-Marisa, 17, NJ, USA Hot water or tea.
-Sabina, 17, NJ, USA ALWAYS carry an emergency period pack. I keep advil, extra pads and tampons, and hand sanitizer in a little pouch that goes in my backpack and purse with me in case of emergency. Make sure to stay hydrated and even though it’s ok to indulge in some cravings, try your best to stick to your normal diet or it could come back to bite you once you finish your period.

-Daniella, 17, NJ, USA Hot water? My period is just really heavy so it causes me stress but there’s nothing I can do about that.

-Cristina, 32, NJ, USA Wear comfy outfits (but that is my style anyway) and keep my stomach warm or take tylenol when cramping and shower twice a day (you feel better as well as clean) and understanding your cycle helps to anticipate how each time will play out.

-Raychel, 16, CA, USA I usually try to be good about exercising so my period symptoms are fewer and easy to manage. On days when it is absolutely painful and bringing me down, if I can I take rest, if that's not an option I try to scale back and do only things that are absolutely crucial for the day. I use a tampon on days when my period might stop me from doing a particular activity, but don't use it on a regular basis.
-Gayathri, 40, NJ, USA Exercise or rest.

-Bridget, 17, CA, USA Ooohhmagahd periods are the WORST. Eat cereal and lots of peanut butter of course not if you’re allergic and crackers and chocolate and cuddle up in a blanket or in bed and watch Friends. -Elena, 33, NJ, USA Hormonal birth control doesn't just help prevent pregnancy, but has helped me better handle my period, too. It helps reduce PMS symptoms, causes periods to be less painful, and also shorter and less heavy.
-Lauren, 28, NJ, USA Exercise, Heating Pad/Hot Water Bottle, Binge watching good movies and drinking lots of water!
-Lucy, 28, KY, USA Tracking my cycle has been VERY helpful, so that if I'm feeling weird or down, and I see that my period is coming up, I know those feelings have a hormonal cause and it immediately acts as a "mind over matter" solution that helps me feel better. Your cycle will also change over the course of your life, so what is "normal" for your cycle will change over time. Eat well, get enough sleep, take whatever works for you for cramps, use products that you can feel good about. I switched to period panties and no longer generate waste products (tampons or pads), which is good for the environment, and I'm not putting processed chemicals in/near my vagina, which I also feel good about. Do NOT feel ashamed of having your period. It is completely normal and EVERY woman you've ever met, ever admired, ever hated, etc... has had her period too. If you refuse to feel embarrassed about a completely normal process (or anything else, for that matter) then the person who is trying to embarrass you will end up being the one embarrassed. Also, when you feel you are mature enough for sexual activity, have sex on your period. It really does make cramps go away and is quite enjoyable. Just keep a towel handy for clean up and always have safe sex.
